Low Power Radio Channels

Important to read me first! You should be aware of the basic FCC guidelines before attempting to use any radio channel that isn't pre-installed on a consumer grade walkie radio. You're also responsible for your own actions of course. There are real consequences possible when fiddling with anything that transmits any kind of signal. This isn't legal advice, just educational information.

For the responsible individual, this page may educate you and serve as a reference to the fifteen 2W channels used by consumer grade walkie-talkies. Skipping the seven 0.5W channels for simplicity. (bottom of page)

Before using any handheld transmitter, check if it has an FCC label or stamp. If you have any doubts, you can find the full information on the FCC website.

(example)- The Baofeng UV-5R is a handheld "ham" radio capable of transmitting on numerous channels. The one in my possession has a label under the battery from the FCC (and operates at 2W in low power mode). According to the information available on their own website, I can use it to transmit in low power mode, on low power frequencies that are available for public use. However, there is public documentation of real-world misuse cases. One such i'll link to. Where a man in 2019 was sent a cease and decist(PDF) after interfering with emergency services. Though using the same radio that I own, he did so illegally. Which is... not hard.

Had he continued, it's possible he could have been fined in excess of a hundred-thousand dollars for each day of illegal transmissions.

In short, please be fully aware of your equipment. Check every setting and have a full working knowledge of the device you intend to use. I don't want to recieve the same letter Johnathan did.

This information ONLY covers information regarding low power (2W) channels that are available for public, non-commercial use. Please ensure your device does not exceed two watts of power on these frequencies for this use case (general communication at short range on an FCC approved and labeled device)
